Preparation

Preparation

1. Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and brown sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and salt until well combined.

Dough Formation

3. Combine Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir using a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.

4. Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

Rising

5. First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Baking

6. Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.

7. Second Rise

Cover the loaf with a damp cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes until it has doubled in size.

8. Preheat Oven

While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

9. Bake the Bread

Once the dough has risen, bake it in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

Cooling

10. Cool the Bread

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
