Balsamic Reduction
Method
Preparation of Salad Components
- 1
Slice Tomatoes and Mozzarella
Wash the vine-ripened tomatoes under cold water, then slice each tomato into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Slice the fresh mozzarella cheese into similar thickness rounds.
- 2
Prepare Basil Leaves
Gently rinse the fresh basil leaves under cold water, then pat them dry with a clean towel. Set aside.
Making Balsamic Reduction
- 3
Combine Ingredients
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons of honey (or maple syrup) over medium heat.
- 4
Simmer
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow it to simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened and reduced by half.
- 5
Cool the Reduction
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the balsamic reduction cool completely. It will thicken further as it cools.
Assembly
- 6
Layer Ingredients
On a large platter or individual plates, alternate layers of tomato slices, mozzarella slices, and basil leaves. Start with a slice of tomato, followed by a slice of mozzarella, and then a basil leaf, repeating the process until all ingredients are used.
- 7
Drizzle with Balsamic Reduction
Once assembled, drizzle the cooled balsamic reduction over the tomato, mozzarella, and basil layers. Season with salt and pepper to taste, if desired.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately as an appetizer or side dish. Enjoy your fresh Tomato Caprese!
