Method

Brewing Process

  1. 1

    Mashing

Start by mashing the pale malt and crystal malt in 6 liters of water at 152°F (67°C) for 60 minutes. This process helps convert the starches in the grains to sugars.

  2. 2

    Boiling

After mashing, sparge the grains to collect the wort and bring it to a boil. Add the hops and boil for 60 minutes. This will extract the flavors and bitterness from the hops.

  3. 3

    Cooling

Once the boiling is complete, cool the wort quickly to about 70°F (21°C) using a wort chiller or an ice bath. This is crucial to avoid contamination.

  4. 4

    Fermentation

Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermenter and pitch the yeast. Seal the fermenter with an airlock and let it ferment in a cool, dark place for about 1-2 weeks.

  5. 5

    Bottling

After fermentation is complete, dissolve the priming sugar in a small amount of boiling water and add it to the beer before bottling. This will carbonate the beer. Bottle the beer using sanitized bottles and caps.

  6. 6

    Conditioning

Let the bottled beer condition for another 1-2 weeks at room temperature. This allows the carbonation to develop.

  7. 7

    Enjoy

Chill the bottles in the fridge for a few hours, then enjoy your homemade Harpoon IPA!
