Ground Coffee - Ingredients
Method
Ground Coffee - Directions
- 1
Measure beans
Weigh or measure whole beans: use 0.12 cups (≈20 grams) of whole beans for an 8 fl oz (240 ml) cup of brewed coffee. Adjust quantity to taste (standard ratio ≈1:15 to 1:17 coffee to water by weight).
- 2
Set grind size
Select grind size appropriate for your brewing method. For drip or pour-over use medium grind (similar to sand). For French press use coarse; for espresso use fine. If you already have pre-ground coffee, skip to Step 4.
- 3
Grind beans
Place measured beans in the grinder. Grind to the chosen grind size in short pulses for a burr grinder to achieve even particle size. Use about 20 grams/0.12 cups of beans to yield one 8 oz cup.
- 4
Store ground coffee
If not brewing immediately, transfer ground coffee to an airtight container. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 1–2 weeks for best flavor. Avoid refrigeration and freezing for daily-use coffee, as moisture and odors can degrade flavor.
- 5
Brew (basic method)
Heat 8 fl oz (240 ml) of filtered water to 195–205°F (90–96°C). Place the appropriate amount of ground coffee into your brewer (paper filter for pour-over or basket, coffee maker, or French press). Pour or run the hot water over the grounds, ensuring even saturation. For pour-over, bloom with ~30–40 ml water for 30–45 seconds, then continue pouring. For drip, start the machine. For French press, steep 4 minutes then press.
