Preparing the Cake

Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

Combine Mixtures
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gradually stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.

Bake the Cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes
Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Preparing the Frosting

Mix Butter and Cocoa
In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter and cocoa powder together until well blended.

Finish with Vanilla
Stir in the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.
Assembling the Cake

Layer the Cakes
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.

Add Second Layer
Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.

Decorate
Optionally, decorate the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
