In a bowl, combine the cleaned calamari rings with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Toss to coat evenly and set aside.

In one shallow dish, place the all-purpose flour. In a second shallow dish, add the cornstarch. In a third shallow dish, pour the beaten eggs. Dip each calamari ring first into the flour, then into the cornstarch, and finally into the beaten eggs, ensuring that they are well-coated.

Combine Ingredients
Add the crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and sugar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.

Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.

Garnish and Serve
Once the sauce is done, remove it from heat, and stir in the chopped fresh basil. Serve the fried calamari hot with the spicy marinara sauce on the side.
