Method

Cocktail

1

Chill the glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

2

Add Campari, sweet vermouth and gin into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled about two-thirds with ice.

3

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted — the outside of the mixing glass should feel very cold and slightly frosted.

4

Discard the chilling ice/water from the rocks glass if used. Fill the chilled rocks glass with fresh large ice cubes.

5

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the fresh ice using a Hawthorne or julep strainer.

6

Express the oils from an orange twist over the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick snap, then rub the rim with the twist and drop it into the drink as garnish.

7

Serve immediately. If you prefer a lighter, longer drink, top with 1 oz soda water and garnish with an orange slice.
