Method

Bagel Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape Bagels

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use your thumb to poke a hole in the center, stretching it to form a bagel shape.

Cooking Bagels

  1. 6

    Boil Bagels

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Gently drop in the bagels, boiling them for about 1 minute on each side. Remove and place on a baking sheet.

  2. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  3. 8

    Add Toppings

Brush the tops of the bagels with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.

  4. 9

    Bake Bagels

Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

  5. 10

    Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
