Method

Pudding Preparation

  1. 1

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Whisk them together until the cornstarch is fully dissolved.

  2. 2

    Cook Mixture

Place the saucepan over medium heat and continuously whisk the mixture until it thickens and begins to bubble. This should take about 10-15 minutes.

  3. 3

    Incorporate Butter

Once thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the butter until melted and smooth.

  4. 4

    Transfer to Baking Dish

Pour the pudding mixture into a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.

  5. 5

    Chill Pudding

Let the pudding cool to room temperature, then refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or until set.

Caramel Preparation

  1. 6

    Mix Sugar and Water

In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir gently to combine.

  2. 7

    Cook Caramel

Place the saucepan over medium heat and allow the mixture to come to a boil without stirring. Swirl the pan if needed to ensure even cooking.

  3. 8

    Monitor Color

Continue to boil until the sugar turns a deep amber color, about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.

  4. 9

    Add Caramel

Once the caramel is ready, immediately pour it over the chilled pudding, tilting the dish to spread it evenly.

  5. 10

    Set and Serve

Let the caramel set for a few minutes before slicing the pudding into squares for serving.
