Pulled Pork Preparation

Prepare the Pork
Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and place it in a slow cooker.

Mix Spice Rub
In a small bowl, combine paprika, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Rub this mixture all over the pork.

Add Aromatics
Chop the onion and garlic, then place them on top of the pork in the slow cooker.

Add Liquids
Pour the apple cider vinegar and water into the slow cooker around the pork.

Cook
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours, until the pork is tender and easily shredded.

Combine Sauce Ingredients
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

Simmer Sauce
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Shred the Pork
Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.

Add BBQ Sauce
Mix the shredded pork with the prepared BBQ sauce in the slow cooker until well combined.

Build the Sandwich
Toast the hamburger buns if desired, then pile the pulled pork onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with coleslaw if using, and cover with the top half of the bun.
