Prepare the Onions

Slice the Onions
Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
Make the Batter

Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

Add Water
Gradually add the cold water to the dry mixture while whisking continuously until you achieve a smooth and thick batter. Let it rest for about 10 minutes.
Fry the Onion Rings

Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, then carefully place it in the hot oil.

Drain and Serve
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onion rings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
