Method

Prepare the Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry mixture while whisking continuously until you achieve a smooth and thick batter. Let it rest for about 10 minutes.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, then carefully place it in the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry Until Golden Brown

Fry the onion rings in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onion rings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
