Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Macaroni

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Make the Roux

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until bubbly and slightly golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually add 2 cups of milk to the roux while whisking to prevent lumps. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded white cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 0.5 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 0.5 teaspoon of onion powder until smooth and creamy.

Combine and Bake

  1. 5

    Combine Macaroni and Cheese Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce. If using optional add-ins like ham, bacon, or lobster, stir them in at this stage.

  2. 6

    Prepare Breadcrumb Topping

In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of bread crumbs, 0.5 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter until well combined.

  3. 7

    Assemble the Dish

Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish, then sprinkle the breadcrumb topping evenly over the top.

  4. 8

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the macaroni and cheese for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
