Cheese Sauce

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the boiling water.

  2. 2

    Cook the Macaroni

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt the Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour while whisking constantly to create a roux. Cook for about 1 minute until it turns a light golden color.

  3. 6

    Pour in the Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add the Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce the heat to low and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 0.5 teaspoon of salt, 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper, and 0.5 teaspoon of mustard powder until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining

  1. 8

    Mix Pasta with Cheese Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir well to coat all the pasta with the sauce.

  2. 9

    Serve

Serve the macaroni and cheese hot, garnished with additional cheese or breadcrumbs if desired.
