Calamari Steak

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Flour the Calamari

Begin by patting the calamari steaks dry with a paper towel. Season both sides with salt and black pepper. Dredge each calamari steak in all-purpose flour, shaking off the excess.

  2. 2

    Pan-fry the Calamari

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the flour-coated calamari steaks to the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Making the Steak Sauce

  1. 3

    Sauté Onions and Mushrooms

In the same skillet used for the calamari, add a bit more olive oil if necessary. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Then add the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes until they are tender.

  2. 4

    Add the Sauce Ingredients

Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, red wine, dried oregano, dried thyme, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer, reducing the heat to medium-low. Let it cook for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

  3. 5

    Serve

Once the sauce is ready, return the pan-fried calamari steaks to the skillet, coating them in the sauce. Let them warm through for another 2-3 minutes before serving. Enjoy your calamari steak with the homemade steak sauce!
