Onion Rings

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir well to combine. Gradually whisk in the cold sparkling water until the batter is smooth and has a consistency similar to pancake batter.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or a frying pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, it's ready.

  2. 4

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.

  3. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the battered onion rings in the hot oil, a few at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy, turning them occasionally for even cooking.

  4. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot.
