Method
Cake Layers
- 1
Prepare the Oven and Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour five 8-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3
- 4
Incorporate Boiling Water
Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
- 5
Bake the Layers
Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting
- 6
Prepare the Frosting
In a mixing bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the whole milk, until you reach a spreadable consistency. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- 7
Frost the Cake
Once the cake layers are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top. Repeat with the remaining layers, finishing with frosting on the top and sides of the cake.
Ice Cream
- 8
Mix Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until the sugar is dissolved.
- 9
Chill the Mixture
Cover the mixture and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until thoroughly chilled.
- 10
Churn the Ice Cream
Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- 11
Freeze the Ice Cream
Transfer the ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
