Crispy Calamari

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This will help the breading adhere better.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Whisk together to ensure an even distribution of the spices.

  3. 3

    Prepare Breading Station

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined. This will be your wet mixture for breading.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of the flour mixture into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  2. 5

    Bread the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first into the wet mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat it thoroughly in the dry mixture. Shake off any excess flour.

  3. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully place the breaded calamari rings into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
