Pasta

Toppings (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once melted, whisk in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk while continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season

Add 1 teaspoon each of salt, black pepper, and paprika to the cheese sauce and mix well.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained elbow macaroni back into the pot with the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.

  2. 10

    Prepare Topping (optional)

In a small bowl, mix together the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture over the mac and cheese for a crunchy topping.

Baking (optional)

  1. 11

    Preheat Oven

If using topping, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 12

    Bake

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.

Serving

  1. 13

    Serve

Scoop the mac and cheese into bowls and serve hot, garnished with additional cheese or herbs if desired.
