Pop the kernels
In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add a few popcorn kernels and cover the pot. Once the kernels pop, add the remaining popcorn kernels to the pot.

Pop the popcorn
Cover the pot with a lid slightly ajar to allow steam to escape. Shake the pot occasionally to ensure even popping. Continue cooking until the popping slows down to about 2 seconds between pops.

Season with salt
Remove the pot from heat and transfer the popped popcorn into a large bowl. Immediately sprinkle with salt while the popcorn is still warm, and toss to coat evenly.

Combine spices
In a small bowl, mix together the cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper until well combined.

Apply seasoning
Sprinkle the spice mixture over the popcorn while tossing to ensure even distribution. If using, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and toss again.
