Calamari
Spicy Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparing the Calamari
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well until evenly blended.
- 2
Coat the Calamari
Add the cleaned and sliced calamari to the bowl with the dry mixture. Toss until all pieces are well-coated with the flour mixture.
- 3
- 4
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari to the hot oil, in batches if necessary, and fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Making the Spicy Marinara Sauce
- 5
Sauté Garlic
In a medium saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- 6
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, then add the dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
- 7
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 8
Finish with Basil
Once the sauce has thickened slightly, stir in the chopped fresh basil and remove from heat. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
