Method
Making the Pie Dough
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, stirring until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Preparing the Apple Filling
- 2
Mix the Filling Ingredients
In a medium bowl, combine powdered apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Assembling and Frying

Roll Out the Dough
On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles about 5 inches in diameter.
- 4
Fill the Hand Pies
Place a tablespoon of the apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal, and crimp with a fork.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 6
