1. Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into even-sized chunks, about 1-2 inches in size.

2. Cook the Potatoes

Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.

3. Prepare the Garlic (Optional)

If using garlic, peel the cloves and add them to the pot with the potatoes during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

4. Drain the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander and return them to the pot.

5. Mash the Potatoes

Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Add in the butter and continue to mash until melted and well combined.

6. Add Milk and Season

Gradually stir in the milk, and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Mix until the potatoes are fluffy and creamy.

7. Garnish (Optional)

If desired, finely chop the chives and sprinkle them over the mashed potatoes before serving.
