1. Prepare the Potatoes
Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into even-sized chunks, about 1-2 inches in size.
2. Cook the Potatoes
Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
3. Prepare the Garlic (Optional)
If using garlic, peel the cloves and add them to the pot with the potatoes during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
4. Drain the Potatoes
Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander and return them to the pot.
5. Mash the Potatoes
Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Add in the butter and continue to mash until melted and well combined.
