Pasta Preparation

1. Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

2. Make the Roux

In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and golden.

3. Add the Milk

Slowly pour in 2 cups of milk while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook for about 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly.

4. Incorporate Cream Cheese

Add 4 ounces of cream cheese to the sauce, stirring until fully melted and combined.

5. Add the Cheeses

Gradually add 1 cup each of shredded cheddar, gouda, mozzarella, and grated parmesan cheese, stirring constantly until all cheeses are melted and the sauce is smooth.

6. Season the Sauce

Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard powder. Stir well to combine.

Combine and Bake

7. Combine Pasta and Cheese Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the cheese sauce, mixing thoroughly until all pasta is coated.

8. Prepare the Topping

In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of bread crumbs with 2 tablespoons of melted butter.

9. Assemble the Dish

Pour the mac and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top.

10. Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the mac and cheese for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

11. Serve
