Base Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

Sfumato Layer

Method

Preparing the Base

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

Baking the Base

  1. 4

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

  2. 5

    Pour Batter

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

  3. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  4. 7

    Cool Base

Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the pan before transferring to a wire rack.

Preparing the Sfumato Layer

  1. 8

    Melt Chocolate

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth.

  2. 9

    Whip Cream

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar while continuing to whip until stiff peaks form.

  3. 10

    Combine Layers

Gently fold the melted chocolate into the whipped cream until well combined and smooth.

Assembling the Sfumato

  1. 11

    Spread Layer

Once the base is cooled, spread the sfumato layer evenly over the cooled cake using a spatula.

  2. 12

    Chill

Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the sfumato layer to set before cutting.

  3. 13

    Serve

Slice into squares and serve chilled. Enjoy your sfumato!
