Dough Preparation

Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Mix Dough
In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.

Knead Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking

Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Shape Sticks
Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into long sticks about 8-10 inches long.

Prepare Baking Sheet
Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each stick with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, dried Italian herbs, and grated Parmesan cheese.

Cover the baking sheet with a cloth and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

Let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chopped basil just before serving.
