Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Ginger Syrup
Peel the fresh ginger root and chop it into small pieces. Measure 1 cup of chopped ginger and add it to a saucepan.
- 2
Combine with Sugar and Water
Add 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water to the saucepan with the ginger. Stir to combine.
- 3
Simmer the Mixture
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the syrup thickens slightly.
- 4
Strain the Syrup
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the syrup cool for a few minutes. Once cooled, strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove the ginger pieces. You should have about 1 cup of ginger syrup.
Mixing the Ginger Ale
- 5
Combine Syrup with Lemon Juice
In a large pitcher, combine the ginger syrup and 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. Stir well to mix.
- 6
Add Carbonated Water
Slowly pour in 1.5 liters of carbonated water into the pitcher. Stir gently to combine, being careful not to lose too much carbonation.
- 7
Taste and Adjust
Taste the ginger ale and adjust sweetness or acidity by adding more sugar, lemon juice, or optional lime juice as desired.
- 8
Serve
Pour the ginger ale into glasses filled with ice. Garnish with fresh mint leaves if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
