Method

Preparing the Filling

  1. 1

    Chop the Walnuts

Finely chop the walnuts using a food processor or a knife. They should be in small pieces but not ground into powder.

  2. 2

    Mix the Filling

In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well to ensure all the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Preparing the Pastry

  1. 3

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough if it is frozen. Unroll it and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.

  3. 5

    Butter the Baking Dish

Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan. Using a pastry brush, coat the bottom and sides of a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.

  4. 6

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brush with melted butter, and repeat this process for about 8-10 layers. Make sure to butter each layer.

  5. 7

    Add the Filling

Spread the walnut filling evenly over the layered phyllo dough.

  6. 8

    Continue Layering

Add another 8-10 layers of phyllo dough, buttering each layer as before.

  7. 9

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

Baking and Preparing the Syrup

  1. 10

    Bake the Baklava

Bake the baklava in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until it is golden brown.

  2. 11

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine water, granulated sugar, and honey in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

  3. 12

    Add Vanilla

Remove the syrup from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow it to cool slightly.

Finishing Touches

  1. 13

    Pour the Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm syrup evenly over the hot baklava.

  2. 14

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely in the baking dish before serving. Cut along the previously made lines for easy serving.
