Prepare the Spicy BBQ Sauce
- 1
Combine Sauce Ingredients
In a medium bowl, mix together the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- 2
Adjust Seasoning
Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or cayenne for extra heat.
- 3
Refrigerate
Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
Prepare the Burger Patty
- 4
Mix Patty Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- 5
Shape Patties
Form the mixture into two equal patties, about ¾ inch thick.
- 6
Chill Patties
Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for 15-20 minutes to firm up.
Cook the Patties
- 7
Preheat Grill
Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
- 8
Charbroil Patties
Place the chilled patties on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until desired doneness is reached.
- 9
Add Cheese
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and close the grill lid to melt the cheese.
Assemble the Burger
- 10
Toast Buns
While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill.
- 11
Layer Ingredients
On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cheesy burger patty, sliced tomato, and a generous amount of fried onions.
- 12
Add BBQ Sauce
Drizzle the house-made spicy BBQ sauce over the toppings, then place the top half of the bun on.
