Method
Preparation of Caramel
- 1
Make Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add 0.5 cups of granulated sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar melts and turns a golden brown color. Immediately pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.
Preparation of Flan

Preparation of Cake Batter
- 3
Mix Cake Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp of baking powder, and 0.5 tsp of salt. In another bowl, mix 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, 0.5 cups of vegetable oil, and 2 tsp of vanilla extract. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- 4
Layer Cake Batter
Pour the chocolate cake batter gently over the flan mixture in the cake pan. Do this slowly to avoid mixing the layers.
Baking
- 5
Bake the Chocoflan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with hot water to create a water bath. Bake for about 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 6
Cool and Unmold
Once baked, remove the chocoflan from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 30 minutes. Then, carefully run a knife around the edge of the pan and invert it onto a serving platter.
