Pasta
Marinara Sauce
Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Water
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil.
- 2
Cook the Pasta
Add the spaghetti or penne to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.
- 3
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of pasta water if you want to adjust the sauce consistency later.
Preparing the Marinara Sauce
- 4
Sauté Aromatics
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
- 5
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Stir well to combine.
- 6
Season the Sauce
Add dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper to the sauce. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
- 7
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Toss well to coat the pasta in the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.
- 8
Serve
Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
