Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel and slice the onion into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Beef Patty

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into two equal-sized patties.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the beef patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

  2. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Spread mayonnaise and mustard on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place a slice of cheese-topped patty on top of the mayonnaise side of two slices of bread, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with the other slice of bread, mayonnaise side down.

  3. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

In the skillet, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and grill until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Flip and grill the other side until golden and the cheese is fully melted.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve the Patty Melt

Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute. Cut in half and serve warm.
