Method
Coney Sauce Preparation
- 1
Cook Ground Beef
In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 cup of ground beef. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- 2
Add Onions and Garlic
Add 1 tablespoon of finely chopped onion and 2 teaspoons of minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onions are translucent.
- 3
Mix in Tomato Sauce and Water
Pour in 1 cup of tomato sauce and 1 cup of water. Stir well to combine.
- 4
Season the Sauce
Add 1 tablespoon of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 0.5 teaspoon of salt, 0.25 teaspoon of pepper, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir to incorporate all ingredients.
- 5
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
Hot Dog Assembly
- 6
Cook Hot Dogs
Grill or boil 4 hot dog sausages according to your preference until heated through, about 5-7 minutes.
- 7
Prepare Buns
While the hot dogs are cooking, warm 4 hot dog buns in the oven or on the grill for 2-3 minutes.
- 8
Assemble Coney Dogs
Place each hot dog into a warmed bun. Spoon the prepared Coney sauce generously over each hot dog.
- 9
Add Toppings
Top each Coney dog with 0.5 cup of chopped onion, 2 tablespoons of mustard, and 1 cup of shredded cheese.
