Prepare the Sugar Reduction
In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture thickens slightly, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Mix the Drink
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the rum, cherry liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and 1/2 oz of the sugar reduction. Shake well until chilled.

Serve
Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel or cherry if desired.
