Cocktail

Optional (Stirred & Strained Serving Variation)

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

If serving in a chilled coupe or rocks glass, place the glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Prepare ice

If using a rocks glass, prepare a large clear ice cube or several large cubes. If serving up, have plenty of ice ready in the mixing glass.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth.

  2. 4

    Stir

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until well chilled and properly diluted (the mixing glass should frost lightly).

  3. 5

    Taste check

If the drink tastes too strong, stir another 5–10 seconds to add slight additional dilution. Adjust only by stirring — do not add water directly to the drink.

Serving

  1. 6

    Strain

Discard ice or water from your chilled serving glass. Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the stirred cocktail into a rocks glass over a large ice cube (or into a chilled coupe if serving up).

  2. 7

    Express orange oil

Hold the orange peel over the drink, skin-side down, and give it a firm twist to express the oils across the surface of the cocktail. Run the peel around the rim if desired.

  3. 8

    Garnish and finish

Drop the used orange peel into the glass or set it on the rim. Optionally add a single Luxardo or Amarena cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
