Arepa Ingredients

Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Mix the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add warm water while stirring with a spoon or your hands until a soft, pliable dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Knead the dough in the bowl for about 2-3 minutes until it is smooth and no longer sticky. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.

  3. 3

    Shape the Arepas

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it to form a disc about 1/2 inch thick.

Cooking the Arepas

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Make sure the oil is hot but not smoking.

  2. 5

    Cook the Arepas

Carefully place the shaped arepas in the skillet. Cook them for about 5-7 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and have a crispy crust.

  3. 6

    Finish Cooking

Once both sides are golden brown, remove the arepas from the skillet and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.

  4. 7

    Serve

Allow the arepas to cool slightly before serving. They can be sliced open and filled with cheese, avocado, or any favorite filling.
