Method
Burger Patties & Seasoning
- 1
Form patties
Divide the 1 lb ground beef into four equal portions (about 4 oz each). Gently shape each portion into a loose ball then flatten into thin patties about 4 inches in diameter and roughly 1/4 inch thick. Do not overwork the meat—thin, loose patties give the best sear and texture.

- 3
Preheat pan
Heat a large cast-iron skillet or heavy griddle over medium-high heat until very hot, about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and spread to coat.
- 4
Cook patties
Place two patties in the hot skillet (do not overcrowd). Press each patty flat with a spatula to ensure maximal contact (a firm press for 5–7 seconds). Cook without moving for 2 to 2½ minutes until the edges brown and juices rise to the surface. Flip, immediately place a slice of American cheese on each patty, and cook for another 60–90 seconds until cheese melts and patties are cooked through. Repeat with the remaining two patties.
Cheese & Sauce
- 5
Make Double Double-style sauce
In a small bowl combine 3 tbs mayonnaise, 2 tbs ketchup, 1 tbs yellow mustard, 1 tbs dill pickle relish, 1 tsp white vinegar, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/4 tsp onion powder and 1/4 tsp garlic powder. Whisk until smooth and balanced. Taste and adjust — a touch more relish for tang, more mayo for creaminess, or a pinch more sugar if too sharp. Refrigerate until ready to assemble.

Cheese handling
Use four slices of American cheese so each burger will be a double: stack two cheese-topped patties per assembled burger, so cheese melts between both meat layers for a creamy cheese pull.
Buns & Toppings
- 7
Prepare toppings
Thinly slice the 1/2 yellow onion into rings or small dice depending on preference. Shred about 1/2 cup iceberg lettuce and slice 4 tomato rounds if not pre-sliced. Have six dill pickle slices ready (three per burger).
- 8
Toast buns
Heat a clean skillet over medium heat. Spread 1 tablespoon softened butter across the cut sides of the two buns. Toast cut sides in the skillet until golden brown, about 1–2 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- 9
Assemble burgers
Place bottom bun on a plate. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the prepared sauce on the bottom bun. Place one cheese-topped patty on the sauce, then the second cheese-topped patty directly on top (this creates the 'double double'—two patties, two cheeses). Spoon another 1 tablespoon of sauce over the top patty. Add a few rings of sliced onion, 3 pickle slices, a small handful of shredded lettuce, and two tomato slices (or two per burger if preferred). Spread a thin layer of sauce on the top bun and place it on the burger. Repeat assembly for the second burger.
- 10
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. Optionally serve with fries or potato chips. Enjoy the classic double-double with melty cheese and signature sauce.
