Ingredients
Cocktail
Cocktail
1. Measure and combine
Measure 1 part gin, 1/2 part Alta Verde (green amaro), 1/2 part sweet vermouth and 1/2 part Campari. Pour all spirits into a mixing glass or shaker large enough for ice. (The ingredient list above uses 'cups' scaled so 1 cup gin : 1/2 cup other ingredients; for a single Negroni reduce to 1.0 oz gin : 0.5 oz each other spirit.)
2. Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with ice (large cubes or a big cube). Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for about 30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (target ~20–25% dilution by weight). Stirring preserves clarity and silky texture.
3. Prepare serving glass
Place a large ice cube or fresh large cubes into an old-fashioned (rocks) glass.
4. Strain
Strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube. Use a Hawthorne or julep strainer to catch ice shards.
5. Garnish
Express the oils from an orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel over the glass and giving it a firm twist, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the cocktail as garnish.
6. Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of bitter (Campari), herbal (Alta Verde), sweet (vermouth) and botanical (gin).
