Cocktail
Chill glass
Place the old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to lightly chill the glass.
Measure and add spirits
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz amaretto, and 0.25 oz sweet vermouth.
Stir
Stir the mixture gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. The goal is a cold, silky texture and a bit of dilution to round the amaretto's sweetness.
Prepare glass
Discard the ice water from the chilled old-fashioned glass if you used it. Place a large ice cube (or fresh ice) into the glass.
Strain
Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the ice.
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick squeeze so the oils spray onto the surface. Rub the twist along the rim of the glass and drop it in. Optionally, add a Luxardo or maraschino cherry on a pick.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of spicy rye, sweet almond amaretto, and a hint of vermouth and bitters.
Equipment Use Notes
If you prefer a less sweet drink, reduce the amaretto to 1/2 oz and increase rye to 2.25 oz to keep the balance. For a colder, less diluted drink, use one large clear ice cube instead of multiple small cubes.
