Method
French Toast Sticks
Prepare bread
Trim crusts off each slice of bread (optional for kids) and cut each slice into 3 equal strips lengthwise to create sticks. Set aside on a plate.
Make custard
In a shallow wide bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream (if using), granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until smooth and slightly frothy.
Soak sticks
Working in batches of 6 sticks (about 2 slices worth), place the bread sticks into the custard. Let them soak for 10–15 seconds per side, pressing gently so the centers absorb some custard but do not become falling-apart soggy.
Preheat pan
Place a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil (oil raises burn temperature and prevents butter from browning too quickly). Let butter melt and foam but not burn.
Cook sticks
Arrange soaked sticks in a single layer with a little space between them. Cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and set, using tongs or a spatula to turn. Work in batches, adding remaining butter (about 1 tablespoon) and oil as needed.
Keep warm
Transfer cooked French toast sticks to a baking sheet in a single layer and keep warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while finishing remaining batches so kids receive warm pieces.
Finish and serve
Dust sticks lightly with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup and sliced fruit on the side for dipping.
Bacon
Oven-baked bacon (recommended for even crisping)
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top (optional for extra crispness). Lay bacon slices in a single layer on the rack or foil. If making candied bacon, sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the slices and crack a little black pepper on top. Bake 12–18 minutes depending on thickness and desired crispness (thin bacon ~12–14 min). Rotate pan halfway if needed. Watch closely the last 3 minutes to avoid burning.
Pan-fry alternative
For stovetop cooking, place a skillet over medium heat and lay bacon in a single layer. Cook 3–5 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until crisp. If candied, sprinkle brown sugar during the last 1–2 minutes so it melts onto the bacon. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Rest and serve
Let bacon rest 1–2 minutes to firm up. If using the oven method, transfer to paper towels to absorb excess grease. Serve alongside French toast sticks; you can fold or break strips into child-friendly pieces.
