Method
Dough Preparation
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, mix the warm water with the sugar and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center.
Combine Ingredients
Add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil into the well of the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Pizza Assembly
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it heats.
Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide it into two equal portions and roll each into a round shape about 12 inches in diameter.
Add Sauce and Toppings
Transfer the dough to a pizza peel or baking sheet. Spread ½ cup of tomato sauce evenly over each pizza base. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top, and add fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste.
Bake the Pizza
Carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Cool and Serve
Remove the pizzas from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes. Slice and serve hot.
