Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, typically about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Prepare the Roux

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Slowly pour in the milk while constantly whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 4

    Incorporate Cheeses

Reduce the heat to low, then add in the cheddar cheese and cream cheese. Stir until both cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

  4. 5

    Season the Sauce

Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to the cheese sauce, mixing well to combine.

Combining Pasta and Sauce

  1. 6

    Mix Together

Add the cooked elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce. Stir well to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.

Adding Optional Toppings

  1. 7

    Prepare Meat (if using)

If adding prosciutto or bacon, cook in a separate skillet until crispy. Drain on paper towels and chop into bite-sized pieces.

  2. 8

    Top the Mac & Cheese

If using, sprinkle the crispy prosciutto or bacon on top of the mac and cheese. Optionally, add breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese for extra crunch and flavor.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve Hot

Serve the mac & cheese skillet hot, ensuring each serving has a generous amount of cheese sauce and toppings.
