Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Orecchiette

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the orecchiette pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Meatball Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Meatball Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and chopped fresh basil. Mix until well combined.

  2. 3

    Form the Meatballs

Roll the meat mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place on a baking sheet.

  3. 4

    Cook the Meatballs

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 5

    Sauté Aromatics

In the same skillet used for the meatballs, add more olive oil if needed and sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Season

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, add fresh basil leaves, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  3. 7

    Combine with Meatballs

Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet and let them simmer in the sauce for an additional 5 minutes.

Assembly

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta, Sauce, and Meatballs

In a large serving bowl, combine the drained orecchiette pasta with the tomato sauce and meatballs. Toss gently to coat the pasta evenly.

  2. 9

    Garnish and Serve

Top with shaved Parmesan cheese and whole basil leaves. Serve immediately.
