Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Baguette

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch thick slices. Place the slices on a baking sheet, brush both sides with olive oil, and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden and crisp.

  2. 2

    Caramelize the Onions

While the bread is baking, thinly slice the onion. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring often, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from the heat.

  3. 3

    Sauté the Mushrooms

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter if needed. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the baby mushrooms. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they are tender. Season with salt and black pepper. Stir in the truffle oil and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Assembly

  1. 4

    Assemble the Crostoni

Remove the baked baguette slices from the oven. Top each slice with a spoonful of the caramelized onions, followed by a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms. Finally, sprinkle the fontina cheese evenly on top of each crostoni.

Baking

  1. 5

    Bake the Crostoni

Return the assembled crostoni to the oven for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep an eye on them to ensure they do not burn.

Serving

  1. 6

    Serve and Enjoy

Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute before serving. Drizzle with a little extra truffle oil if desired. Serve warm as an appetizer or snack.
