Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Select a chilled rocks glass (Old Fashioned glass). If desired, chill by filling with ice water for a few minutes, then discard the water and pat dry.

  2. 2

Add sugar and bitters (if using sugar cube)

If you are using simple syrup skip this step. If using a sugar cube, place 1 sugar cube (about 1/4 oz) in the glass, saturate it with 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters, then muddle with a muddler until mostly dissolved. If using syrup, add 0.25 oz simple or demerara syrup to the glass and add the bitters directly.

  3. 3

    Add whiskey

Pour 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass over the syrup/bitters mixture.

  4. 4

    Add ice and stir

Add one large ice cube or several regular ice cubes to the glass. Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full rotations) until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted—this both chills and integrates the flavors.

  5. 5

    Express orange oil and garnish

Take an orange peel and hold it with the outside facing down over the glass. Give it a sharp twist close to the surface of the drink to express the citrus oils onto the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. If desired, add a maraschino cherry as a second garnish.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately while cold. Optionally present with a small napkin and a stir stick.
