Onion Rings

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 0.5-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Add Water

Slowly add the ice-cold water to the dry ingredients, whisking until you achieve a smooth batter. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and bubbles, it's ready.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow excess batter to drip off.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. 7

    Drain and Cool

Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  5. 8

    Serve

Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
