Mozzarella Sticks

Marinara Sauce

Method

Mozzarella Sticks

  1. 1

    Prepare the Breading Station

Set up three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with milk, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

  2. 2

    Bread the Mozzarella Sticks

Dip each mozzarella stick first in the flour, coating it completely. Then, dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the cheese. Place breaded sticks on a baking sheet.

  3. 3

    Chill the Sticks

Put the baking sheet with breaded mozzarella sticks in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. This helps them hold their shape while frying.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the mozzarella sticks.

  5. 5

    Fry the Mozzarella Sticks

Fry the chilled mozzarella sticks in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Be careful not to overcrowd the pot.

  6. 6

    Drain Excess Oil

Use a slotted spoon to remove the mozzarella sticks from the oil, and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil and allow it to heat for about a minute.

  2. 8

    Sauté the Garlic

Add minced garlic to the hot oil and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn it.

  3. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and add oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.

  4. 10

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 11

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving.
