Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add a generous pinch of salt.
- 2
Cook Spaghetti
Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti in a colander.
Making the Sauce
- 4
- 5
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- 6
Season Sauce
Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 7
Incorporate Basil
Stir in the fresh basil leaves and continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
Combining & Serving
- 8
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained spaghetti back to the pot with the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add some reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.
- 9
Serve
Toss the spaghetti in the sauce until well coated. Serve immediately, garnished with additional basil if desired.
