Cold Brew Concentrate

Method

Cold Brew Concentrate

  1. 1

    Combine coffee and water

In a clean jar or pitcher, add 0.75 cups coarsely ground coffee. Pour 1.5 cups cold, filtered water over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Stir gently for about 10–15 seconds to make sure there are no dry pockets.

  2. 2

    Steep

Cover the jar or pitcher and let the coffee steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12–18 hours. A longer steep (up to 18 hours) yields a stronger concentrate; ~12 hours is a balanced strength for a 16 oz finished drink.

  3. 3

    Strain

After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or a nut-milk bag into a clean container. Discard the used grounds. This yields a cold brew concentrate.

Serve / Finish (makes one 16 oz drink)

  1. 4

    Prepare glass

Fill a 16 oz glass with about 1 cup of ice cubes.

  2. 5

    Dilute concentrate

Pour 3/4 cup (6 fl oz) of the cold brew concentrate over the ice. Top with 1/2 cup (4 fl oz) cold water or milk (use more or less to taste) to fill the glass to ~16 oz. Stir gently to combine.

  3. 6

    Sweeten (optional)

If you like your coffee sweetened, add 1 tablespoon simple syrup or your preferred sweetener to taste and stir until dissolved. Adjust milk/water or syrup to reach desired strength and sweetness.

  4. 7

    Serve

Taste and adjust dilution or sweetener as desired. Serve immediately with a straw.
