Method
Cake Batter
- 1
- 2
Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together 1.75 cups all-purpose flour, 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder, 1.5 cups granulated sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, 0.5 tsp baking soda, and 0.5 tsp fine salt. Whisk to combine evenly.
- 3
Combine wet ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk 2 large eggs until lightly beaten. Add 1 cup whole milk, 0.5 cup vegetable oil, and 2 tsp vanilla extract; whisk until blended.
- 4
Make batter
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir with a spatula until just combined and no large streaks of flour remain. Do not overmix. Slowly stir in 0.75 cup hot water (or hot coffee for more chocolate depth) until batter is smooth; it will be thin.

Prepare butter
Ensure 1.75 cups unsalted butter are at room temperature and soft but not oily. Place butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or use a large bowl and hand mixer). Beat on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until pale and fluffy.
- 8
- 9
Adjust consistency and flavor
Once combined, add 0.5 cup heavy cream, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 0.25 tsp fine salt, and 2 tbsp cooled espresso or strong coffee (optional). Increase mixer speed to medium-high and beat 2–3 minutes until light and fluffy. If frosting is too thick, add heavy cream 1 tbsp at a time; if too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar (1/4 cup increments) until spreadable.
- 10
Taste and finish
Taste and adjust salt or coffee for depth if desired. Transfer buttercream to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap touching the surface if not using immediately to prevent a crust.
Assembly & Decoration
- 11
Level and crumb coat
If the cake has a domed top, level it with a serrated knife to create a flat surface. Place the heart cake on a cake board or serving plate. Apply a thin layer of chocolate buttercream around the entire cake to trap crumbs (crumb coat). Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes until the crumb coat is firm.
- 12
Final frost
Apply a generous final layer of chocolate buttercream over the chilled crumb coat using an offset spatula. Smooth the top and sides; use a bench scraper for clean edges. Warm the spatula in hot water and dry between passes for a smoother finish if desired.
- 13
Prepare chocolate shavings
Hold a 4 oz semisweet chocolate bar at a slight angle and use a vegetable peeler to shave long curls or thin shavings. Alternatively, use a knife to create small shards. If you have pre-made chocolate curls, have 1/4 cup ready. Keep shavings at room temperature to avoid melting.
- 14
Decorate the cake
Gently press chocolate shavings and curls onto the top and upper sides of the frosted heart, arranging them densely along the top center for a delicate look. Dust lightly with 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder through a fine sieve for a soft matte finish. Add a few fresh berries or a pinch of edible glitter if using, placing them sparingly so the chocolate remains the focal point.
- 15
Chill and serve
Chill the finished cake in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes to set the buttercream and help the shavings adhere. Remove from the fridge 20 minutes before serving to soften the buttercream for easier slicing. Serve at room temperature.
