Matcha Mascarpone Base
Milk & Coffee Layer
Finishing & Garnish
Method
Matcha Mascarpone Base
- 1
Bloom matcha
Sift 1 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl to avoid clumps. Add 2 tablespoons hot (not boiling, about 175°F / 80°C) water and whisk briskly in a 'W' motion until smooth and frothy.
- 2
Whip mascarpone
In a separate small bowl, combine 3 oz mascarpone, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat with a small whisk or fork until smooth and slightly fluffy (do not overwhip to prevent breaking).
- 3
Combine matcha and mascarpone
Fold the whisked matcha into the mascarpone mixture until evenly colored and smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness with up to 1/2 tsp more sugar if desired.
Milk & Coffee Layer
- 4
Heat milk
Warm 10 oz whole milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming and tiny bubbles form around the edge (about 150–160°F / 65–70°C). Do not boil. Alternatively, steam milk with an espresso machine to the same temperature and texture.
- 5
Sweeten espresso
Prepare 2 oz espresso (or very strong brewed coffee). Stir in 1 tablespoon granulated sugar or equivalent simple syrup until dissolved while the espresso is hot.
- 6
Froth milk
If you want a latte texture, froth or aerate the warmed milk to create microfoam (use a milk frother, French press, or whisk vigorously). Keep some foam separate for topping.
- 7
Finish & Serve
- 8
Layer mascarpone
Spoon or pipe the matcha-mascarpone mixture over the milk foam in a thin, even layer (about 2–3 tablespoons). It should float slightly on the foam, resembling the creamy tiramisu layer.
- 9
Garnish
Lightly dust the top first with a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of unsweetened cocoa powder, then dust a little matcha powder (about 1/4 tsp) for color and aroma. If desired, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of crushed ladyfinger or vanilla-cookie crumbs over one side to evoke tiramisu texture.
- 10
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. Stir gently before drinking to incorporate the mascarpone layer into the latte, or sip through the creamy top to get tiramisu-like bites and hot matcha latte beneath.
